This week, Google introduced some cool new generative AI features for Chrome, like tab organiser (much needed), custom AI-generated themes, and AI-powered writing assistance. It even released a text-to-video diffusion model called Lumiere. Google is unstoppable, and if this persists, it is most likely to kill ChatGPT, or certainly make a significant dent in its usage.
The new generative AI features on Chrome will be available in the coming days with an initial rollout for Macs and Windows PCs in the US, followed by other countries.
“We're introducing experimental generative AI features to make it even easier and more efficient to browse — all while keeping the experience personalised to you,” said Parisa Tabriz, vice president of Chrome, in the official blog post.?
Google’s monopoly as a search engine is not new, something that even had Microsoft chief Satya Nadella raise an alarm. But, now the integration of generative AI into the browser takes it to a whole new level. Chrome is currently used by over 3.22 billion internet users, while ChatGPT has about 180.5 million users. Microsoft Edge had over 285 million users as of May last year.?
In the upcoming months, Google is also looking to integrate AI and ML models, including Gemini to help users browse easier and faster. If it's successful in its generative AI ventures, Google can even choke ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot, and squash Perplexity to a pulp.?

AIM got in touch with Maxime Labonne, the creator of Phixtral and NeuralBeagle, to understand his views on the AI landscape, the importance of open source, smaller language models being on par with larger closed ones, and AGI.
“In the long run, open source is [going to be] too powerful and there are way too many people who want to experiment with it right now,” Labonne said. He believes that eventually, open-source models will overtake the closed ones.
