Killer advice from a Headhunter.

Killer advice from a Headhunter.

I am begging each of you to please, stop buying plastic beverage containers. In short, they are one of the main culprits in destroying our planet and we are precariously close to the point of no return. Here are some facts to consider.

1) You may think that you are doing your part by tossing your used bottle into the Blue Bin, but in fact less than 20% are actually recycled. The rest end up in landfills and in oceans.

2) Plastic containers can take over 1000 years to breakdown and those that sink to the bottom of our oceans, they NEVER decompose.

3) It requires 300% of the amount of water to produce a plastic bottle than it does to fill it. Consider how absurd this is when you look at all the drought in the world, both abroad and close to home.

4) It takes 17 million barrels of oil to produce plastic bottles yearly. This could fuel 1.3 million cars for a year, which is the equivalent to all the vehicles in Toronto being fueled for an entire year.

5) Almost 50% of all bottled water is derived from Tap water, which is 1000 times less expensive than bottled. In addition it's been found that 50% of all bottled water manufactures don't adhere to the very health and safely standards that they helped to create.

6) Every square mile of the ocean has 46,000 pieces of floating plastic in it. As this plastic breaks down into tiny pieces, wildlife mistake it for food and ingest it and ultimately die from poisoning. This effect ripples all the way up the food chain and yes, back to us.

7) Just to give you some perspective. Canadian's alone discarded enough water bottles to circle the Earth, 4 times and as North Americans combined that usage could circle the Earth 40 times!

The bottom line is this. There is absolutely no logical or intelligent reason to buy, or use, plastic containers that you end up discarding after a single use. It is short-sighted, ignorant and selfish.

It is imperative that we remove the concept of "disposable" from our lexicon, because if we don't do so soon, we will find that in fact humanity will be what becomes disposable.
