Hello from KILIMANJARO in Africa!
I bring a group here every year, and after the mountain, we celebrate with a five-day safari. It’s life-changing, and completely AMAZING. One main purpose is the celebration of life with The CancerClimber Association, by giving a survivor an Adventure Support Grant (ASG). As I’m sure you’re aware, I’m a 2-time terminal cancer survivor, and I think one of the best, and most satisfying things you can do is to give back and help someone else. By changing their life for the better, you empower that person tremendously, and truly make a lasting impact.
The annual Kilimanjaro trip is a “pay-it-forward” type of fundraiser, so whatever we raise this year, will go to a survivor (or 2, or 3 – depending on how much we raise) next year! It’s a beautiful way to help others.
Let me introduce you to the ASG recipient this year, in his own words:
My name is JMichael Shipman, from Beaumont, TX and a recent graduate of Texas A&M University! In 2017, while in working on my Construction Science Degree, I was diagnosed with testicular cancer. I was living close to MD Anderson at the time, which is where I was treated. They did everything humanly possibly to make my stay as best and comfortable as they could. Everyone from the Doctors to the janitorial staff were super friendly and that made my stay so much better. I was lucky to catch it very early (stage 1), am in remission now, and just had a clean one year checkup. While going through treatment, I saw an ESPN segment featuring Sean and his adventure to the North Pole. I was amazed at all he was able to accomplish. I immediately emailed him to say how he was my new inspiration, a hero, and mentioned how I wanted to go on an adventure myself to show that cancer can’t and won’t define me. He emailed me back, and to make a long story short, I was awarded this year’s CancerClimber Grant to climb Kilimanjaro. I arrived in Kilimanjaro last night and we begin our climb in just a few days. I cannot begin to explain how excited and honored I am to be on this trip. This year’s adventure would not have been possible without Sean, CancerClimber, and the generous people who have donated in the past. To make sure I am able to pay it forward so a different survivor can go on this trip next year, I have set up a fundraiser on CrowdRise. Our goal is to raise $5,000, and we are almost half way there! If you are able to support in any way, please do, and just remember this trip would not have been possible for me or any of the past climbers without the generous donations from people like you. Thank you!
What JMichael forgot to tell you is that he continued through college while battling cancer, and this amazing guy graduated, not just with honors, but Cum Laude!! Incredible human being for sure.
What other amazing individuals can we get on this trip, and how can you help make that happen? Without your generous support, this wouldn’t be possible, so please go HERE, https://www.crowdrise.com/…/campaign/climbing-kilimanjaro-f… donate, and help by forwarding this message to a few people who can do the same. $5, $10, $1,000,000 – doesn’t matter, but let’s try and shatter that $5000 goal, and see if we can send two or THREE survivors next year!
As they say in Swahili, “Ahsante sana!” (thank you very much).
