The United Nations declared 15th July and the international day of ?Youth Skills. The intention behind the observance of international days and weeks in to educate the public on issues of concern as well as mobilizing will and resources to address global problems.
?
Youth Skills have been noted as an area of concern for South Africa for many years, and the with the emergence of the Youth Employment Service (YES) in March 2018, saw the CEO Initiative partner with government to work towards solving the problem of Youth Unemployment and supporting B-BBEE scorecard improvement.?With youth unemployment sitting at 62% it’s fair to say that youth unemployment remains a consistent area of concern. While a percentage of this can ascribed to the current economy, it’s also fair to say that there is a skills shortage in our country.
?How can we help?

Coaching is a particularly helpful approach when it comes to Youth employment, particularly if these are people entering the workplace for the first time. I would even go further and say that it’s also important for the people leading or managing the new entrants. Our experiences when first joining the workforce set the stage for our engagement and relationships for the rest of our careers. It’s important that we learn how to have challenging and uncomfortable conversations, and coaching can help people learn this, as well as coach them through various challenging workplace experiences, but with impartiality.
The benefits extend beyond reducing youth unemployment in your country, but can benefit your business financially. Learnerships allow you to reduce your taxable income, utilising the 12H Learnership allowance. If you recruit within the ETI range (18-29) there are additional financial benefits for your organisation. If you participate in Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment you are able to claim the full amount as part of your skills spend, and if the employees that you enroll in learnerships are employees, then you are also able to claim their salaries as part of your skills spend.
