Kidney Function
So you will know:
Kidney function deteriorates with age even if people do not have any other diseases, according to research published in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology. Bjorn Eriksen of the University of Tromso - The Arctic University of Norway and colleagues studied the kidney function of almost 3,000 people aged 50 to 70 and 70 to 95 to determine how the kidney function develops. The researchers measured kidney function by injecting a substance into the blood veins that only separates into the kidneys and measuring how much of the substance remained in the blood after a few hours, indicating the kidney's ability to remove toxins and waste products. The study found loss of kidney function happens to all humans, making it a potential way to determine aging in general. #UniversityofTromso
AND...
New research published in Clinical Kidney Journal reported on two COVID-19 patients with injury to the renal corpuscles or filter membrane and to the renal tubules. Kidney biopsies showed capillary collapse in the glomeruli, podocyte swelling and glomerular deposits of immunoglobulins. Tubule injury, partly with tubule atrophy and necrosis, as well as inflammatory cells were also found. Researcher Ziad Massy of the University of Paris-Saclay said it seems probable that the injury was not caused directly by the viral infection, but rather by a SARS-CoV-2-induced inflammatory reaction. "Particularly in the context of genetic APOL1 risk variants, SARS-CoV-2 might have triggered the 'collapsing [focal segmental glomerulosclerosis]' in accordance with the 'second hit' hypothesis," Massy said. #EuropeanRenalAssoc
