Kickstart Your Freelance Biz: 3 Tips to Attract the Right Clients

Struggling to attract your dream clients? Let me help you out! Today, I'm sharing three quick tips to set you up for success.

First, Let's Recap the Fundementals

People use money to solve problems. So, to be successful in the marketplace, you need to understand what problems your ideal clients have and how your product or service solves them. Then, you need a strategy on how and where you'll promote your services and reach your clients.

The truth is, your prospective clients can't buy from you if they don't know you exist. Nor will they choose you over others in the marketplace if they're not sure why they should.

So, what should you do?

Tip 1: Focus On One Thing

Focus on one person (your target market) with one problem. Then, choose one platform or marketing strategy until you master it. Play to your strengths. Become known as the go-to person for that particular skill set. For instance, if you're a copywriter, specialize in web copy, or SEO or writing Youtube thumbnails that get clicks. Or, if you're a business coach, narrow your target audience to a specific group like 7-figure entrepreneurs or Gen Zers who want to become entrepreneurs.

The greater your focus on understanding your target audience and delivering value to them, the more effortlessly you can ignite your passion and drive.

Tip 2: Invest in Building Your Personal Brand

What does that even mean? Building your brand means creating a consistent, cohesive identity that your audience feels connected to. It's the pieces of content that people recognize you by and get excited about. Think: recognizable logo design, fonts, colors, language.

This could mean setting up a portfolio website with all of your work nicely organized in one place or creating social media channels to share your story on (e.g., Instagram, YouTube, Twitter). It could even mean setting up a podcast to talk about topics that are important to you and your ideal audience. Or perhaps you're the person who attends all the networking events and follows up with memorable emails or phone calls.

The goal is to build something that conveys who you are, what you stand for, and why someone should choose you over the other options out there. Investing in building your personal brand will help people to remember you, connect with you on a deeper level, and ultimately choose to work with (or recommend) you.

Let Your Brand Reflect Your Values

Make sure your brand reflects the values you live by and those that fit well with your industry or field of expertise. For example, if your brand involves creativity and innovation, be sure to use fonts, colors, and language that convey those ideas. Photos of you in creative or innovative settings can also help people get to know you better.

Lastly, it’s important to remember that your personal brand isn’t something that you build once and forget about. It should be an ongoing process of tweaking and refining as you gain new skills and experience, and as the world around you changes. Revisit its core components regularly and make sure they’re still accurately representing who you are. That way, when someone googles your name or looks you up on LinkedIn, they’ll find a true reflection of the professional you.

Advertise Your Brand

Once your brand is in place, it's important to actively promote it. Share content online that promotes your personal brand

No matter how you choose to express yourself, make sure that your unique identity shines through. Be authentic and consistent in the way you communicate with others; this is key to building a recognizable brand that stands out from the crowd. Ultimately, you want people to remember you for your message and values!

Tip 3: Get Your Message Out There

Get your message out there about your business—and do it often. Create content to get noticed on social media platforms like Twitter and LinkedIn. Or, consider writing a blog post or article for publication in a print magazine or sending out cold emails. These are all great ways to spread the word and grow your brand. Don't forget to use visuals—adding a few relevant images, GIFs or videos can really make your content stand out!

Bonus Tip: Learn About Sales and Marketing

Finally, the biggest battle freelancers face is a skills gap. It's important to gain knowledge in sales and marketing tactics so you can properly promote your own business. Take advantage of online videos, seminars, books, and articles to stay up-to-date on the latest trends so you can learn from experts in the field! This will help you understand what works best for your business and keep customers coming back time and time again.

Good post, Robyn-Lee. I'm glad I am in the process of ticking all the boxes. It's a never ending process. But it's fun and worth it. Thanks for sharing so many goodies. It's like eating a bucket of popcorn while binge-watching Game of Thrones. Jaja.
