So many students are moved to internalization of literacy skills while struggling, screaming, and expressing frustration. Yes, it is the brain at work. Yes, we need to rewire the brain. But for many of our students, the process seems painful and daunting. This is where many teachers, who empathize deeply with their students, face a dilemma—they feel the students' pain and sometimes decide to ease up or stop. This is when students risk becoming “labeled,” their struggles marked as deficiencies instead of challenges to overcome.
It’s like an unspoken secret in classrooms: the internalization of foundational skills can be difficult and uncomfortable. When teachers see the visible struggle and frustration, it’s natural to feel compelled to back off, to protect their students from further distress. But stopping short of pushing through the discomfort prevents students from building the resilience and pathways needed for skill mastery. This hesitancy becomes a critical problem in the long-term development of literacy skills.

Conclusion: Pushing Through to Mastery
Helping students internalize foundational skills involves dedication, structured support, and an understanding of the cognitive and emotional aspects of learning. Vygotsky’s emphasis on the social and interactive nature of learning complements these strategies by ensuring students are challenged within their ZPD and supported by MKOs. While the journey can be challenging, especially for struggling learners, it is critical not to stop when frustration appears. Teachers must balance empathy with persistence, supporting students to push past the discomfort and build essential skills. By applying strategic, evidence-based practices and involving parents and the community, educators can guide students through this process, fostering resilience and a deeper understanding that leads to long-term academic success.

3 个月I truly appreciate your article. I believe this has been a missing link in the whole process. If things challenge students too much, then everything shuts down, and students began to think something is wrong with them. I often tell students you have to learn, how you learn. I can present the same information in different ways and your brain will catch on to it then the students let me know when the information made sense to them.

4 个月I have experience helping students in the primary grades "press through" answering critical thinking questions, and using important strategies for reading comprehension. At the beginning of the year, most students were content to let others who had mastered the skill answer all the questions for the class. However, teachers must be sure all students learn how to "struggle" and move toward demonstrating how to use key strategies. Educators must guard against thinking they have taught a skill to the class because a few demonstrate competency. Keeping track of individual progression toward mastery remains essential. Thank you for your reminders and tips.
