Kick bad mental habits out of your life with these proven tips
Continuing from where we left in the last blog, I’m going to get straight to the point here. In the last article we discussed about some toxic habits that are actually doing a lot of damage to not just your productivity, but personal life as well. I ended the post with a question - how to kick these habits out of your life.
‘Stop procrastinating start doing. Switch to a project management software.’
So here I am with a list of tried and tested ways to kick bad habits out of life and become a better person. Let us take a look at what those ways are -
1. Become more aware
When you leave your mind in a state of openness, you give it an opportunity to become more aware. Like mentioned in the last post, when we are into the habit of creating a preconceived notion about something, we are leaving little space from brain to think logically.
Rather than judging the situation or the person, make yourself aware about it. Try and get to know about the same. Ask questions, get them answered before reaching to a conclusion. This will get you into a habit of putting facts and figures first, and that will help you take better decision; making your personal and professional life better.
2. Emulate someone’s success
It’s hard to figure out a way to succeed, but do the hard work when you can work smart. And use the hard work that someone has put into his life to achieve success.
The keyword here is smart. You just don’t have to follow someone blindfolded. You have analyze their habits, and see which one of those habits fit within your lifestyle. How could they make your life better. There are so many influencers out there, you just need to pick one. Or in case you are ready to do all the hard work, then you can go ahead and pick some good habits from one and a few from the other and start practicing.
Like they say the secret to permanently break a bad habit is to love something greater than that habit. So figure that greater habit and begin practicing the change.
3. Train your brain
Breaking a bad habit is more about controlling your brain than your body. Even science has suggested that if we are able to take control of our subconscious mind we can achieve the unthinkable. And this is just a bad habit that we are trying to overcome here.
If you think of something as a bad habit, train your brain to stay away from it. A common example here that I’d like to put forward is of the habit of procrastination. There are not many people in this world who don’t procrastinate. Now if you are a procrastinator and keep putting things off to tomorrow, then rather than using this time to lay your butt off on the couch start using it for doing something that you act.
4. Practice, practice and practice
The most important aspect of adopting anything in life is to practice it a lot. Since childhood we are taught that practice makes a man perfect. And yes it does. There is so much debate about that highly prevalent thought - it takes 21 days to form a habit - be it good or bad.
While I am neither promoting the statement, nor I have something to prove it wrong. All I believe is that if you continue to do something for 21 days on the trot, the chances of it becoming a habit are increased several folds. No matter you want to inculcate a good habit in your life, or want to get rid of a bad one practice is going to be the key.
