There are references to Khichdi like dishes in Mahabharata, Ayurveda and in other ancient texts too. It's normally believed that the name came from the Sanskrit word khiccā (??????) which is a mixture of rice, lentils and spices.

Nothing like the Bengalis to adorn Khichri with many caps. The holy Khichri as bhog for deities , to easy digest meal for the ailing, to that accompanied with hilsa fish or fishegg fry to herald monsoon, or enriched with mutton to compete with Biriyani and many more. For me Moongdal khichri with fried brinjals and papad remains the favourite
