Keyword difficulty is irrelevant - There are better ways to choose your keywords.

Keyword difficulty is irrelevant.

One day it's 40. The other it's at 25.

Besides fluctuating a lot, every tool gives its own estimate.

None are reliable and none are realistic.

Not to mention this is the biggest lie ever:

All they do is prevent you from ranking for keywords that are actually within your reach.

For those of you using Ahrefs [my SEO tool of choice], anything up to 35-40 is EASY to rank for.

Go for it!?

My advice is to not give in to a tool that tells you it will be hard to rank for your dream keyword.

Besides this...

Focus on what truly matters.

Like volume within your target market.

And how relevant the keyword is for what you sell:

  • Will readers be able to solve the problem they have with your product?
  • Is your product the only solution?
  • Can they fix their pains without any product?
  • Is the solution they're looking for free?

The best advice for picking keywords that suit your business?actually comes from Ahrefs.

They've got a strict framework for analyzing whether a keyword is really related to your product or not.

Similarly, I've created my own 3-tiered framework to prioritize keywords:

  • Priority 1:?Topic solves an issue for which you need [PRODUCT] by all means or else the problem/need can’t be fixed.
  • Priority 2:?Topic is directly related to a [PRODUCT] feature and we can show readers how to solve a problem through [PRODUCT]. BUT the use of the tool is not mandatory to fix the problem OR the reader intent isn’t directly targeted at using a tool like [PRODUCT].
  • Priority 3:?Topics related to [PRODUCT] industry and audience types where one or more features can be briefly mentioned.?

Feel free to customize this for your own business and its complexities.

Startups, for instance, might find it easier [and cheaper] to go for:

  • Lower-volume keywords that are directly related to their product. When someone comes across the post, you know they're really looking for a solution like yours. Plus, often these keywords are easier to rank for.
  • High-volume keywords that are a bit more general. These allow you to tap into a much larger audience. Even if you can't rank super high from the start, they'll still rank for smaller keywords, bring in some traffic, and are perfect for an update once your domain authority is higher.

Difficulty is calculated from DA/DR/Whatever it's called in your tool. And that metric is irrelevant as well. I've seen SERPs where no results answer the intent of the query. What does Google do when it can't find content? Rank content that has the most probability to satisfy the intent: big websites with good content. Keyword difficulty goes through the roof because these websites have high DA. Me, working with a low DA website, producing content that matches the intent. Me, ranking in a matter of weeks on a keyword with 75+ difficulty. SEOs all around the world: "keyword difficulty matters". :D
