The Key to Unlocking Potential in Large Language Models
Those that know me well, know I am extremely impatient and have a new hobby every 5 seconds. If I don't get something straight away I become frustrated and move on to something else. For my friends, colleagues and clients - it seems that getting the hang of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no different. If it doesn't give us what we want the first few tries, then we don't get attached as easily as we might to freshly baked bread and the smell of roasted coffee. This is where I found the art of prompting to become really essential in creating our craved value add, and I went on a side-quest to find out more.
In the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence, large language models have demonstrated remarkable capabilities in understanding and generating human-like text. One of the crucial techniques that enable these models to perform various tasks effectively is "prompting." In this article, we will delve into what prompting is, why it is important in the context of large language models, and best practices for crafting effective prompts to ensure accurate and relevant outputs.
What is Prompting in AI?
Prompting refers to the method of providing an initial input or "prompt" to an AI model to guide its response. Essentially, a prompt is a piece of text or a question that sets the context for the model, instructing it on what kind of output is expected. For example, if you want the AI to write a poem, you might start with the prompt, "Write a poem about the beauty of nature." or, if you ask stupid things like me "Why do spiders have 8 legs", with my most recent marvel "Why do blue bottles exist and what do they eat, where do they come from" (these are a particularly annoying jellyfish in Australia that I clearly have PTSD from).
In the context of large language models, prompting is the primary way users interact with the model. These models are trained on vast amounts of text data and can generate coherent and contextually relevant responses based on the prompts they receive.
