A fire broke out at the historic Royal Albion Hotel in Brighton, a 200-year-old Regency-style building overlooking Brighton Pier, on a Saturday evening in July 2023.
Parts of the hotel have been deemed structurally unsafe, with Brighton and Hove City Council indicating that demolition would take two to three weeks. The fire service has scaled back its operations, though a reduced presence and cordons remained at the site.
At the height of the incident, 15 fire engines were on site, with support from neighbouring fire services. Assistant Chief Fire Officer Mark Matthews highlighted that significant parts of the building were saved due to the sustained efforts of the fire crews. Properties behind the hotel are inaccessible due to demolition risks.
No injuries were reported. All initially unaccounted-for occupants have been located safely. The A259 road outside the hotel remains closed. Sussex Police, in cooperation with ESFRS, was investigating the fire's cause.
The hotel previously experienced a fire in November 1998. Learning from past incidents, it is evident that historical buildings require ongoing risk assessments and updated safety measures to mitigate fire risks effectively.
Continuous risk assessment and structural evaluations post-incident are essential to ensure safety and inform future preventive measures.
