Communication is the key to success!

Let me say that again a bit differently, 80% of your success comes from effective communication.

According to Carnegie Institute of Technology, “No matter what job you have in life, your success will be determined 5% by your academic credentials, 15% by your professional experiences, and 80% by your communication skills.”

Many of you might reason, “But, it’s a gift that only a few people possess.”

It might surprise you then that, the human body, besides other things, is a multifaceted and multi-sensory communication apparatus. All of us have the hardware and software to communicate. In fact, the ability to communicate is an inborn quality, and we begin life with our first cry at birth, then on we acquire more sophisticated ways to communicate.

One principle is crucial to understand here: “The tongue has the power of life and death,” (Proverbs 18:21).

Put in differently, the quality of our communication, in whatever form it may be, verbal, non-verbal, written, visual, etc., has tremendous impact on every aspect of our life. Our words could be used to heal or harm, build or destroy, as a sword to attack or a shield to defend. The human history is replete with the examples of how the words have caused wars or established peace.

Professionally, communication helps us every step of the way - right from our first job application, or business proposal, climbing mid-career ladder, vying for a senior management role, establishing oneself as a leader, or writing a post retirement memoire - it is the effective communication that results in success.
