The key role of urbanism

55% of the world's population lives in cities, which are responsible for 70% of carbon emissions and 80% of electricity consumption. Likewise, of the almost 5,000 million people who live in urban areas, 18% do so in marginal areas or with structural problems.

The United Nations Organization has set for the year 2030 the objective of generating more sustainable cities and communities, where vulnerable people improve their living conditions and development is friendly to the environment.

Urban planning is a discipline closely linked to this issue, since it is responsible for raising awareness and promoting sustainable urban planning, where there are green spaces, access to priority services, ecological transport, waste treatment and functional aesthetics for the inhabitants. In this way, overcrowding is avoided and pollution levels are reduced.

Having awareness as citizens is a priority to defend urban planning with a global perspective, but it is also the task of authorities and leaders to draw attention to the impact that development can generate in the place where we live.
