The Key to Reducing Burnout & Helping your Employees Reconnect to Wellbeing, Engagement & Productivity is… Resilience.

The Key to Reducing Burnout & Helping your Employees Reconnect to Wellbeing, Engagement & Productivity is… Resilience.

This September, a New Resilience at Work online program launches to help employees retrain their mindsets, reduce hyper-vigilance, change reactions, self-regulate emotions to reduce stress and absenteeism.

According to a recent Gallup Survey and their latest publication due out in September Blind Spot, employee well-being is key for workplace productivity. The five elements of well-being they recommend are; work, financial, community, physical and social well-being.

Now more than ever, and not just because of COVID, negative emotions are on the rise and have been rising for a decade. ?

To quote Gallup, “When your employees' wellbeing is thriving, your organization directly benefits -- they take fewer sick days, deliver higher performance, and have lower rates of burnout and turnover. But when your employees' wellbeing suffers, so does your organization's bottom line.

Well-being affects employee engagement.

We know that engaged employees produce far better outcomes, but Gallup recently discovered that engaged workers who are not thriving in their lives are much more vulnerable and add risk to your organization. Gallup showed that:

61% are more likely to experience burnout often or always

48% more likely to report daily stress

66% more likely to experience daily worry

2x more likely to report daily sadness and anger

Employee engagement is the single biggest driver of career well-being.

In the absence of a good job and fulfilling career, there is no net thriving. When organizations intentionally address both well-being and engagement, the effects are additive and mutually beneficial for employees and business outcomes alike.”

Alan Murray of Fortune, CEO?Daily writes “The pandemic was a painful reminder that health and prosperity are inextricably linked.?You can’t run a successful business without caring for the health of your employees and customers. You can’t be a successful leader without tending to the physical and mental well-being of your team”

We all have stress but in these times of unrest, the economy, the war, Covid, isolation, working from home, family, money, the environment, the political scene -?employees are facing more than their fair share of the average amount of traditional stress we were once dealing with.

Burnout is on the increase as many of us battle to find a life/work balance, maintain productivity and stability, oh, and yes, enjoy life!

According to WHO (World Health Organization)?burnout is now recognized as a chronic condition and is characterized by exhaustion, a negative attitude towards wok and a sense of un-productiveness.

To increase well-being at work, it is important to understand the characteristics of stress on employees:

·??????When stress is unrelenting it will turn into chronic stress impacting employees’ health and abilities to perform.

·??????The COVID-19 pandemic only made matters worse. Depression and anxiety exploded. Census Bureau data recorded clinically significant symptoms for depression and anxiety, at 24 and 30 percent respectively, only a few months after the beginning of the pandemic (Fowers & Wan, 2020).

·??????Stress is a natural response to a perceived challenge or a threat.

·??????Physiologically, stress is a buildup of hormones in your body that create tension, strain, or pressure and that is initially a positive response readying the person to freeze, flee, or fight.

·??????Once the additional stress hormones are no longer necessary or the person perceives he or she is no longer in danger, the excess stress hormones need to be released from the body or they build up and become toxic.

·??????If the body is constantly under stress our ‘allosteric system’ becomes charged too frequently with no chance to vent the build-up of energy

·??????If the threating or dangerous situation continues, managing it requires the use of known coping mechanisms or the development of new coping mechanisms as a means of adaptation to the continued stress of the situation.

·??????Excessive or chronic stress that has no opportunity for release can have negative effects on a person’s physical, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral states.

·??????The release of the hormone cortisol will damage memory, hurt or weaken your immune system and enlarge your stomach which can increase the risk of heart disease.

·??????A weakened immune system will lead to continuous colds and viruses and then in turn to more serious diseases.

? Stress costs American employers around $300 billion per year, as per statistics on stress and health. (Eastern Kentucky University)

·??????Employers from all over the country report bearing significant expenses due to stress. These include health care costs and costs due to employee absenteeism and reduced productivity.

Why Focus on Building Resilience in Your Workplace?

???????Resilience is how you bounce back from challenging situations and reset.

???????Resilience is how you handle pressure and keep your cool.

???????You can learn to build your resilience and retrain your mindset to manage stress in a whole new way, so it doesn’t burn you out.

Building resilience using specific methods help to retrain your brain and reduce your triggers to stress.

What is Resilience?

-??????Improved resiliency is the capacity to prepare for, recover from and adapt in the face of stress, and challenge of adversity.

-??????The greater your resilience the more energy you have available when you need it to stay clear and optimize your performance.

-??????More energy means a greater capacity to self-regulate and be in charge of how you respond to situations.

What is The Difference Between Resilience and Stress?

???????Stress is how you react.

???????Stress is a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances.

???????Resilience is the muscle you build to reduce stress, and maintain an optimal level of functioning.

The Benefits of Resilience For Employees:

·?????More ease and inner peace

·?????Better sleep

·?????Less friction in relationships

·?????Less worry

·?????More alertness

·?????Improved communication

·?????Better focus and decision making

·?????More positive attitude

·?????Increased composure

·?????Fewer triggers

·?????Increased self-confidence

·?????Less stress, anxiety and fear

·?????Empowerment

I feel this program has come at the perfect time to go beyond the usual stress management programs and help employees understand the ‘why’ behind their reactions and triggers to personal and workplace emotional challenges, helping them?dial the volume down effectively on limiting thoughts, beliefs that are sabotaging their engagement at work.

Our goal is to undertake a Needs Analysis evaluation of the organization’s key stressors and identify staff turnover costs and their goals to reduce absenteeism, better manage stress in the workplace, increase productivity, innovation, resiliency, empowerment and work/life balance.

Specific employees?complete an online stress assessment that will be compared to the a before and after on the outcome and benefits of the program with onsite accountability visits and online group meetings.

The online program itself is six weeks, one hour a week and includes videos, downloadable pdfs, podcast links, self-care assignments and Consumer grade technology to support and build personal resilience and well-being. Plus one calming aromatherapy product that works with the olfactory system for the release of neurochemicals to focus, calm or uplift the senses.

This is a combination of mindfulness, neuro-change, mindset empowerment and science proven methods to engage employees and give them fast, effective methods that work.”

Ange Matthews CEO of LeaderSauce, a change management company that equips executives, managers, and teams to lead and succeed in our changed world of work commented: “Today, traditional management is being challenged to adapt to dramatic shifts caused by the global pandemic, a wellness crisis, changing demographics, new perceptions toward corporations, and high expectations of management and leadership.?A good talent management strategy includes programs that nourish employee wellness.”
