Key Questions to ask in 2018; Can the electric vehicle revolution drive the mining industry?
This is the first of a series of question and answer analysis reports from GFMS, which look to target ‘hot topics’ in the battery industry for the year to come.
To look at this question, it is first important to identify the major reasons behind the growth of electric vehicles. First, the advancement in government and country legislation surrounding air pollution, and second, the advancement in battery technology which has given rise to use of lithium-ion batteries, on a mass scale, as the driving force to power electric vehicles (EV).
How has the mining industry reacted as a result?
Rise of Lithium-ion Batteries by type
1991 Lithium Cobalt Oxide (LCO)
1996 Lithium Manganese Oxide (LMO)
1996 Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP)
1999 Lithium Nickel Cobalt Aluminium Oxide (NCA)
2008 Lithium Nickel Manganese (NMC)
2008 Lithium Titanate (LTO)
