Here are some brief key points from the UAE Labor Law;
- Employment Contracts: All employees must have a written contract that specifies employment terms, job responsibilities, salary, and duration. The contract can be either unlimited or limited in duration. but according to the latest amendment contract should be limited.
- Working Hours: The standard working hours in the UAE are 8 hours per day or 48 hours per week. During Ramadan, working hours are reduced to 6 hours per day.
- Leave Entitlements: Employees are entitled to various types of leave, including annual leave (30 days per year), sick leave (up to 90 days), maternity leave (45 days), and other types of leave.
- Termination: Employers must provide notice of termination, which ranges from 30 days to 90 days depending on the length of employment. Termination can be for valid reasons as outlined in the labor law.
- End-of-Service Benefits: Upon termination, employees are entitled to receive an end-of-service gratuity, calculated based on the duration of employment.
- Wages Protection System (WPS): Employers must pay salaries through the WPS, ensuring timely payment and proper documentation of wages.
- Discrimination and Harassment: Employers must provide a workplace free from discrimination based on race, color, sex, or religion. Harassment of any kind is prohibited.
- Health and Safety: Employers must provide a safe working environment and adhere to occupational health and safety regulations.
- Probation Period: New hires may undergo a probation period of 6 months, during which either party can terminate the contract with shorter notice.
- Dispute Resolution: The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) handles labor disputes, providing mediation and support before escalating to the courts.
