The Key, The Map, or the Will

Watching people get so wrapped up with ChatGPT is both rewarding and troubling. You see, it's just a key. It's a key in search of a treasure. And that's one way to make something happen. If you have a key, you might also find the treasure.

But maybe you have the map. Maybe you know how to get to something. That's a useful thing to have, even if you've yet to discover a key. Treasures can be accessed in many ways, and you don't always need a key to find wealth.

Sometimes, you have neither. You have only the will to take action.

"'Dear old Frodo!' said Pippin. 'Did you really think you had thrown dust in all our eyes? You have not been nearly careful or clever enough for that! You have obviously been planning to go and saying farewell to all your haunts all this year since April.... And pretending that you had come to the end of your money, and actually?selling?your beloved Bag End to those?Sackville-Bagginses! And all those close talks with?Gandalf.'" - J.R.R. Tolkien

The Key, The Map, or the Will

What we all seem to do in life is get confused by observing other people. Someone might have the key, and they might talk about the key, and they might be very excitable. But if you don't have the key (such as you don't immediately think something like ChatGPT is the solution to your challenges, etc), that doesn't make you wrong. It means you might have a map, or you might have the will.

We get confused because we think we should ALL have the key. AND the map. AND the will.

It's so rare that anyone has all three. We often get only two at best, and more of us get just one. We might know the map inside and out. We might have figured out a system. Or we might have the will, but little else, not realizing that often times, "will" is one of the most important tools we need.

We Tune Ourselves to See One of These Three

I see keys. I see them everywhere. I pick them up off the ground the way you might see four leaf clovers.

I'm not a map guy. I can make maps for other people, but ask me to follow a map (process)? I'm screwed. Ask my GPS. "Turn left here. HERE! Recalculating. HERE! Recalculating."

The will, I work on. Sometimes, I just want to play with my keys. Because keys can be treasure long before you actual slot them in the lock.

You might be a map person, a will person, or a key person.

But when you see things come along like ChatGPT, don't fret if you don't immediately see a lock to put it into. Maybe you're smarter than me, because maps lead to treasure faster than any key. And will means you'll try again and again.

Me? I'm fiddling with this key looking for treasure chests.

Great perspective, especially about teams & what makes people good teammates. I’m more of a map guy—especially with my career in instructional design. Decoding & encoding performance is where I’m strong. Which presents a different fear I have about ChatGPT—I hope it remains a key so I can have a second career mapping! ??
