Supporting Female Leaders To Step Into Their Next Level Of Leadership??Executive & Leadership Coach & Mentor??NHS Leadership Development ??Author
One of the things I love about my role as a coach is seeing the numerous talented women I work with achieve their potential.
It's extra special because I witness how they’ve dealt with the challenges and setbacks that have come up along the way.
The path to success is rarely without its hurdles!
As female leaders, navigating through these challenges takes resilience to overcome some of the common pitfalls that may halt your progress.
In this newsletter, I want to shed light on some of the key leadership mistakes you might not know you’re making and explore effective strategies to overcome them.
Common leadership ‘mistakes’
Fear of failure
This can massively hinder your progress as a leader, particularly if you’re a bit of a perfectionist! It can have a negative impact and prevent you from taking risks or pursuing your goals.
Instead of ‘failure’, think about how you can use your mistakes as a learning experience rather than seeing them as an irrevocable setback.
When you adopt more of a positive and growth mindset towards mistakes, you’re more likely to boost your resilience and your confidence, when dealing with the challenges that crop up.?
Avoiding self-promotion
One of the most prevalent mistakes I’ve noticed among female leaders is their reluctance to promote themselves. In fact, it’s not uncommon for them to shy away from any acknowledgement of their achievements.
One of my early clients, Sarah, was consistently delivering outstanding results but rarely spoke up about what she’d accomplished.
With my support she started to reframe self-promotion as a means of demonstrating her unique value and that of her team.
She felt able to assert herself more confidently in meetings which led to greater recognition of her skills and expertise.
Difficulty delegating
It’s common for female leaders to take on too much responsibility because they fear that delegation might make them look weak or incompetent.
However, delegating tasks not only empowers your team, but also allows you space to focus on things only you can do as well as pursue more strategic initiatives.

Avoiding tough conversations
When you want to maintain harmony and avoid conflict, it’s all too easy to shy away from difficult conversations. There's a very real fear it will be perceived negatively.
Yet avoiding conflict can lead to unresolved issues festering beneath the surface.
Instead of avoiding difficult conversations, approach them with empathy and with a focus on finding a workable solution. By addressing conflicts head on, you can foster collaborative and transparent working
Neglecting self-care
Female leaders often prioritise the needs of others at the expense of their well-being…even when you know the benefits to finding a workable balance between your professional and your personal life.
It’s important for your physical and mental health to make time for the activities that nourish your mind, body and soul.
Self -care isn’t selfish, it's actually essential for sustainable leadership.
No such thing as mistakes - only opportunities for learning
In my experience leadership isn’t about perfection but more about continuous learning, self-discovery and adaptability.
When you think about some of the ‘mistakes’ above you might be making or have made in the past [and I know I’ve made all of these!], remember that each challenge presents an opportunity for professional growth and personal empowerment.
You’re perfectly capable and ready to embrace your unique strengths and to keep striving to make a positive impact.

This is your time to step into your power and lead with confidence!
