How much READING do you do? When was the last time you finish reading a book? When was the last time you visit your local library or a bookshop?
The best way to stay up to date with the activities of prosperous individuals is to read. Whether you are keeping up on the latest news, studying a business-oriented, reading a personal development book written with powerful research, reading the biography of a successful person you admire, reading can help boost your creativity, improve your thought processes at work and enable you to de-stress after a long day. Between my teenager time and my 20s I did not read much! The result was clear, a life is no clear focus and mediocre. At 27 I decided to read more, return to education, writing long reports, essays and exams. Being in university, and knowing why I was there made my life more interesting. I found my purpose - to be a teacher! Today I am a successful university teacher working and teaching in some of the most amazing places around the world. Reading has transformed my life completely.
Reading can help boost your creativity, improve your thought processes at work and enable you to de-stress after a long day.
You have probably said it to yourself many times before: “I really need to start reading more. “When you are an out-of-the-habit adult with a full schedule, however, finding the time to pick up a book can be a challenge. Some people never face the challenge!
But this is a goal worth striving for. It was for me, and for sure can be for you too! Science is beginning to back up what readers already know: Reading offers far-reaching benefits for your life. The activity increases the blood flow to your brain and amps up cognitive functioning.
Reading offers far-reaching benefits for your life. The activity increases the blood flow to your brain and amps up cognitive functioning.
Researchers at Stanford University observe the brain patterns of literary PhD candidates while they are reading a Jane Austen novel. The fMRI images suggest that literary reading provides "a truly valuable exercise of people's brains." And reading regularly can make you a calmer and more empathetic person. I am sure we agree we all need more empathy to survive in this challenge days we are facing in our global society.
Here some ways to improve your reading:
- Set an specific goal to read key books in your list. I usually read more than one book at a time, but you may want to start with your favourite one. The most important is to start!
- Schedule a time nonnegotiable. I read at any time, but my preferable time is mornings.
- Choose a space to read. Very important! I do most of my reading in a coffee shop over a nice latte! when travelling also is my favorite way. Everyone is different, choose your place carefully.
- Pick the format you feel more comfortable. ebooks or hard paper copy book. I do both, but I still prefer a hard copy book! Again everyone is different!
- Visit bookshops and libraries. It’s vibrant places full of books of all backgrounds. I can spend hours in these places, and if there is a coffee shop I could live there!
So here we go, make an habit of reading more, and get your results. More than that, become more successful in many areas of your professional and personal life. I am an example of someone who failed in education in my teenager time, but later on acquired the strong reading habit and transformed my life completely! Check my profile to see.
The challenge is now in your hands - and in your mind!
Enjoy the results (I am),
