The key to the good life and good company is values (a great exercise for you inspired by James Timpson and Brene Brown)

James Timpson has just been appointed Prisons Minister. The Timpsons' story has become a beloved story of how focusing on trust, empowerment, non-judgement, and kindness has been the foundation of such immense success, by both culture and results.

Today, I'd like to give you a short exercise that is both inspired by James Timpson's note on Leadership and an adapted exercise from Brene Brown's Dare to Lead.

James Timpson's belief about Leadership reflects the values of the business he has led so brilliantly. This brings me to a short exercise that can be transformational.

Identifying your values

Our values define what we believe in and stand for. They guide everything that we do. We lead the most enriching lives and build the most inspiring and adored places to work when our values are not only clear but also true to them every day. So, here is an exercise I have slightly adapted from Dare to Lead.

  1. Please take a look at the values listed below.
  2. Write down the values that most resonate with you. Try to list no more than twenty, but don’t worry if you list more.
  3. Work through those you have picked, then choose the five most important.
  4. Once you have written your five, turn them into value statements like James Timpson's leadership notes.
  5. Then live by them and build a better world :-)

I hope you find the exercise fun. I have no doubt James Timpson will find a way to build a prison system that builds a much better future for everyone.

Great post Ben and huge food for thought. One of my additional favourites is Autonomy, believing in an employees ability to make decisions within a given remit. It illustrates trust and inspires confidence
