I'll never forget my first international trip. It didn't happen until my 30s, after I had left my consulting job and?finally had the time and energy for?something more than business travel (which granted, allowed me to achieve "executive platinum" status, but was never to fun, noteworthy, or exotic places).
My first trip was to Peru, where I met my good friend to?drink pisco sours in Lima, haggle in the markets for anything made of alpaca, and of course... climb Machu Picchu.
And while all of that sounds fun (and it was!),?what the pictures don't show is just how much out of my comfort zone I was.
It was a new country, a new culture, and the native language(s) were incomprehensible to me.?Even just landing in the airport was a shock to the system.
Luckily I was with my friend who understood Spanish (and was a comfort from home - we met in NYC). We also had a wonderful tour guide who kept us safe, showed us the best places, and helped us with the culture and language pieces as needed.
My trip to Peru is?one of my most fond memories... and also responsible for me catching the travel bug (which by the way, I've never recovered from!).
Now why do I share this? Because?getting outside of our comfort zones is so important for those of us who want to live rich, full, impactful lives.?And I'm betting that's you if you're reading this!
And landing a new job, changing careers, or launching your side hustle most definitely qualifies as a "leave your comfort zone" event.

2 年A trip that that took me our of my comfort zone was camping & kayaking the Apostle Islands on Lake Superior. It might seem pretty tame, but I am not a camper and it was my first trip after being in a wheelchair. The tree roots were pain, but being on the water, going in and out of caves, and sluicing over shipwrecks was magical. Life is full of discomfort. Sometimes embracing it, gives you the illusion of control and the resiliency to keep trying.

2 年Thanks for sharing your story, Kristen! I took one of your online job search webinars in 2020 and your tips helped me land a new job! My recent big trip was to Amsterdam and Brussels. I haven’t been outside the US since I have been married- which makes 21 years. Traveling during the tail end of Covid by myself to meet up with a friend was challenging but definitely gave me “the bug” again! Thanks for all you do to bring joy!!
