The Key to Fighting Fake News and Lies in an Info Attack on an Election?

A Good Incident Response Plan! A Science article published yesterday provided a factual foundation for what you know from school-yard basics: Lies and rumors spread more quickly and reach more people than truth and facts. Kudos to important research by Soroush Vosoughi, Deb Roy and Sinan Aral of MIT. A clear sense of the problem is crucial to developing coherent and effective solutions. The implications of that research to digital democracy are easy to understand in light of Russian efforts to undermine US democracy in the 2016 elections, but we shouldn't just stand by and wring our hands! At the Defending Digital Democracy Project, a great team, led by Siobhan Gorman, recently published a playbook with excellent background and guidance for leaders struggling to combat information operations.
