The Basics: Design Principles For Accelerating Student Learning With High-Impact Tutoring

Looking for a quick and clear overview of what makes tutoring “high-impact”? This newly updated Design Principles brief?identifies common components of effective programs. It incorporates new research on effective design and implementation components in high-impact tutoring programs. Tutoring programs with the greatest effectiveness for improving math and reading achievement tend to include the following design principles:

  • Program Focus?(i.e., math and/or reading, grade appropriate, target students in need)
  • Instruction?(i.e., 3+ sessions/week, 30-60 minute sessions for older students, sessions for young students can be shorter, in-person or virtual)
  • Tutor?(i.e., consistent, well-trained)
  • Learning Integration?(i.e., during the school day, aligned with curriculum)
  • Data Use?(i.e., sessions are driven and informed by data)

Bridging the Novice-Expert Gap via Models of Decision-Making: A Case Study on Remediating Math Mistakes

Due to growing demand many tutoring programs use novice tutors who, unlike experienced educators, may struggle to effectively address student mistakes. This research evaluates whether certain types of AI (such as GPT4) can help tutors remediate math mistakes. The findings show that prompts developed by expert educators are critical for AI models like GPT4 to have high-quality responses. Responses from GPT4 with expert educator prompts (e.g., “simplify the problem”) are +76% more preferred by experienced educators than responses from GPT4 that are not given expert prompts.?

This shows the potential of embedding human experts’ thought processes in future generations of AI to enhance their capability to bridge novice-expert knowledge gaps. For example, the AI can generate several initial responses that the novice tutor can pick from and further edit to send back to the student. Altogether, the work shows promising results of an expert-guided human-AI approach. This work has led to a randomized-controlled trial testing ?the impact of AI-assisted human tutoring on student learning outcomes, with results expected later in 2024.?
