The Key to Breaking Free from the 9-5: Building Income Beyond Your Salary

As someone who has spent years helping architecture students and young professionals break into the industry, I've seen firsthand how the fear of “stability” holds many people back from realizing their full potential. A common complaint I hear is about low salaries, limited freedom, and frustration with being stuck in a cycle of working long hours for a paycheck that never seems to reflect the value you’re bringing. And yet, many hold on tightly to their jobs because of the security they believe comes with a “stable” salary.

The truth? Relying solely on a paycheck will keep you trapped in the same cycle of working for someone else, with little to no opportunity to achieve true financial freedom. If you want to escape the grind and make your money work for you, you need to shift your approach to earning.

Here are some key insights I’ve learned throughout my entrepreneurial journey:

1?? Build Non-Hourly Income

The fundamental nature of a job is trading time for money—your salary is based on how many hours you work. The problem is, time is finite, and your salary will always have a cap. To break free from this, the key is to build "non-hourly" income streams, where you’re not trading time for money. You need to create systems or assets that work for you while you sleep.

For instance:

  • Sales roles that evolve from fixed salaries to commission-based earnings.
  • Consultants who transition from working for companies to taking on independent clients.
  • Creating long-term, scalable assets like writing, content creation, or building a community.

These assets don’t reset every month like a salary. Instead, they accumulate, build, and can eventually generate income with little ongoing effort. If all of your money comes from working hours, you’re simply stuck in a cycle of “working for a paycheck” rather than building real wealth.

2?? Sell Results, Not Time

One of the biggest shifts that separates those who build wealth from those who don’t is this: selling results, not time. Employees, no matter how hard they work, are at the bottom of the earnings chain because they’re still selling their time. The truly successful people who make big money have figured out how to sell high-value results.

This formula is key: Resources + Knowledge + Results = Income

  • Resources: People who know how to leverage gaps in information (e.g., brokers, investment advisors) can create wealth by connecting the right resources with the right opportunities.
  • Knowledge: Those who have deep experience or expertise (e.g., consultants, coaches, personal brands) can monetize their skills in a way that provides more value than just clocking hours.
  • Results: Entrepreneurs, top-tier salespeople, and brand managers focus on delivering outcomes that can be priced based on their true value.

If you’re still exchanging time for money, you’re not in the high-earning game. Moving away from this logic is more important than working overtime.

3?? You Don’t Have to Start a Business, But You Must Learn to Earn Independently

One of the biggest misconceptions I see is that in order to escape the 9-5 grind, you have to start a business. This doesn’t have to be the case. You don’t need to be an entrepreneur to gain financial independence; what you do need is the ability to earn money independently.

Ask yourself: If I were to leave my job tomorrow, how would I make money? If your only answer is “find another job,” then you’re not yet free. True financial freedom comes from being able to identify and monetize your unique skills, regardless of a traditional job structure. As architects and designers, we have a wealth of knowledge, creativity, and value to offer. You can package your skills in ways that allow you to thrive outside of the corporate world.
