Navigating B2B buying and selling can be quite daunting due to many factors. For buyers, this involves research, evaluating options, and the intricacies of decision-making. Sellers on the other hand, must deal with multiple stakeholders, extended sales cycles, fierce market competition, reaching specific audiences, standing out in a crowded market, and staying current with market trends. So, what's the most effective way to overcome all this complexity and generate B2B leads?

I've encountered and tackled the challenges of lead generation throughout my extensive career in advertising, B2B sales, and marketing. At one point, I took a B2C detour selling Range Rovers, and while it was a refreshing change to have leads walk in the door, it was a headache to negotiate the price.

With fewer pricing objections and significantly higher profits, the true challenge in B2B marketing is generating the right leads. But there are obstacles. Through my journey, I've uncovered what I believe are the five main ones.

Effective B2B marketing demands skilled talent. Marketers excel in understanding their target audience, crafting compelling messaging, and positioning their offerings for maximum impact. However, the constant pressure to generate leads presents unique challenges that require specific strategies.

This includes identifying and nurturing potential customers who have shown interest, then converting them into paying clients. Unlike broader marketing initiatives focused on building brand awareness, lead generation zeroes in on individuals or companies likely to be interested in your offer. Only by doing so, will you fill your sales pipeline with qualified prospects and drive revenue growth. In my experience, five major obstacles impede B2B lead generation:

  • Unawareness
  • Distrust
  • Indifference
  • Misunderstandings
  • Unprofitability

My Journey in Selling B2B Consulting Services

In the early stages of my career, I specialized in IT Recruitment services—a highly lucrative field at the time given the high demand for computer programmers. Shortly after establishing my own firm, I achieved substantial sales.

But as a sole proprietor in a sea of competitors, getting clients was a challenge. Many prospects were indifferent to my services because they didn't understand the value of recruitment, while others were put off by the perceived high fees. My days were spent tirelessly cold calling from my home office. It was exhausting work until I applied a unique cold calling system.

Improving B2B Lead Generation Predictability

My new approach involved researching and compiling a list of 500 potential prospects. Each morning, armed with cue cards containing company details, I made targeted prospecting calls. By making 25 calls daily and cycling through the entire card deck monthly, I gradually improved my results.

Initially, I gathered information on hiring managers, while subsequent calls introduced my services along with a free offer—a cost-per-hire analysis. By taking incremental steps with this drip marketing approach, my results continually grew.

Since then, the B2B landscape has evolved to include digital platforms like LinkedIn. Leveraging tools like Sales Navigator has made the research significantly easier, yielding better results in less time. But my core approach to lead generation remains unchanged—drip campaigns and tribe building.
