The Key to Becoming and Staying Organized in the New Year

The Key to Becoming and Staying Organized in the New Year

“What is important is seldom urgent, and what is urgent is seldom important.”

Dwight D. Eisenhower, 34th President of the United States of America

Every year millions of people make New Year’s resolutions, hoping to spark positive change.? Yet, despite having the best of intentions, about 22% of those who make resolutions fail after about a week.

If your intent ?is to become more organized, limit stress, and increase the quality and quantity of time for yourself, your family and friends, I’d like to offer some valuable tips from the 34th President of the United States, Dwight D. Eisenhower, who served from 1953 to 1961.?

Before becoming the head of our country, Eisenhower was a five-star general in the U.S. Army and served as the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe during World War II. As a celebrated leader, he had an incredible ability to sustain his productivity, not just for a week or a month, but for decades. For that reason, it’s no surprise that his methods for time management and productivity have been studied by millions of people and passed down as leading examples.? Eisenhower used a system to categorized tasks.? For example:

  • URGENT and IMPORTANT! DO IT NOW! - Tasks you will do immediately
  • IMPORTANT, but NOT URGENT! DECIDE A TIME TO DO IT! - Tasks you will schedule to do later?
  • URGENT but NOT IMPORTANT! WHO CAN DO IT FOR YOU? - Tasks you will delegate to someone else
  • NEITHER URGENT nor IMPORTANT! ELIMINATE IT! – Tasks that you can cross off

Following Eisenhower’s well-known strategy for taking action and organizing your tasks, you should find it easy to separate your “to-do list” based on four levels of priority.? More so, it will help preserve the quality of your life, as you’ll eliminate wasting time and energy.? For more organizing tips, you may want to checkout one of the below resources.
