Key adaptation progress and more - January updates from the EPA
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Ireland
Protecting and improving the environment as a valuable asset for the people of Ireland.
Welcome to 'The month in 5 updates' - a quick roundup from the EPA on what you need to know about the Irish environment.
What is Ireland doing to adapt to the impacts of climate change?
In January, the EPA published a report outlining what Ireland is doing to adapt to the impacts of climate change.
The report provides a summary of recent climate adaptation developments in Ireland, highlighting the need to accelerate implementation, especially cross-sectoral and integrated actions for maximum impact. Here are some of the key developments highlighted:
??The 2024 National Adaptation Framework prioritises social justice, equity, and integrated planning, with expanded sectoral adaptation plans and monitoring.
??Ireland’s first National Climate Risk Register (2025) will prioritise urgent risks like flooding and drought.
??? Local Authority Climate Action Plans (2024) and new sectoral adaptation plans due in 2025.
??New funding alongside expanded climate-related expenditure tracking, support strategic investments.
??€317M invested in climate-related research (2020–2023) to fill key knowledge gaps.

Nature & biodiversity key takeaways from the State of the Environment Report 2024
Biodiversity and nature underpin our economy, our food security and our wellbeing. The EPA's State of the Environment Report 2024 provides four key highlights for hope and improvement relating to nature and biodiversity.
??Over 85% of our protected habitats and over 1/3 of our protected species are in unfavourable status.
??In Ireland, our natural habitats and biodiversity have been squeezed to the margins of our landscape and policies.
?Nature restoration needs to be at the core of Ireland's actions and our policies; nationally, regionally and locally.

Students showcase knowledge at EPA stand at BTYSE
In January the EPA attended the BT Young Scientist Exhibition at the RDS. Our team hosted quizzes with students on our State of the Environment Report. It was truly inspiring to witness their enthusiasm and deep understanding of science. We're grateful for the opportunity to connect and share insights about the EPA's research. If you were there, thank you for stopping by our stand! We look forward to continuing these meaningful conversations.
