Kevin McCarthy's Concessions to Secure House Speakership

For modern politicians, the third in line to the president position is one of the most sought-after gavels in the country. Since the first Speaker in 1789 to the present day, this position has become a potent position that comes with perks and associative benefits that can leave many to speculate on its sanctity.

In recent days, Congressman Kevin McCarthy achieved this position by the following vote tally:

• Yeas: 216
• Nays: (for House Minority Leader Congressman Hakeem Jeffries D-NY 8th District): 212
• Present: 6?

But, this tally didn't come without a price. The following concessions were made by McCarthy in order to secure the votes he needed to be the Speaker of the House for the 118th Congress:

1. Pro-McCarthy PAC does not get involved in primaries.
2. Single House member vote to remove Speaker.
3. Select Committee on "Weaponization of DOJ."
4. 72 hours to read a bill before going to the floor.
5. Make public the salaries of public officials.
6. Freedom Caucus members get committee assignments.
7. Term limits and border security get priority.
