The "Kevin Bacon of Perth"

I have had a few connections reach out to me over the last week and ask me about my headline description: “The Kevin Bacon of Perth”.
As many of you know I don’t take myself too seriously.
I don’t know exactly when the nickname surfaced or even who started it but this little anecdote will explain it.
I have had a bad back over the past year so I’ve been visiting my OT friend Erin regularly, up to once a week.
Every visit without fail she says: “Hey I met another person who knows you! This is ridiculous!” ...
You see this is a conversation not new to me as I have it regularly with numerous people. So this is how the “Kevin Bacon of Perth” came about.
The thing with Perth though is it’s more like ONE degree of separation not 6!
Now those of you who know me, will also know I love a good chat and due to my roles in business development at CCIWA and my relocation and property businesses I have made expanding my network a priority.
You know that event on a mid-winter Wednesday night at 6pm in the CBD you can’t be bothered to go to? Well I am usually there! #perthnetworkingqueen.
I often compare my career to being an “Acrobat” and my network being the “Net”. The more people I know that think fondly of me, the more strings and stronger the net. Therefore reaching higher
altitudes and navigating difficult paths is more easily done.
I also have a ridiculous memory for personal details about people .... so I usually remember what people do for a living, what their business is, even what their spouse and kids are up to (this is getting more limited however as the number of people increases).
I also cannot bear the idea of anyone not loving Perth as much as I do and wasting their time and money when they arrive here to start a job or a business.
One of my past relocation clients gave me the nickname “Sue Google” don’t Google it just #askSuePember - because Sue will know the wholesaler or get us a better deal or know the company with the best customer service.
Anyway there is an opportunity for me to use this network and knowledge of the people and businesses of Perth to connect people together for excellent outcomes.
It helps me promote 100Women.org.au, https://www.mylocalmind.org.au/, https://stpats.com.au/ and https://perth.dressforsuccess.org/ and other NFPs I’m involved with, my businesses https://www.aussieos.com.au/ and https://micasaproperty.com/ so we can continue to grow and employ more amazing people with flexible working conditions. It also helps my business consulting services that are focused on business development, creating opportunities and showcasing WA.
So even though a few people might think I’m damaging my brand .... I’m happy to wear that.

I also love the fact that Kevin Bacon used his fame to create this awesome charity!

5 年I love the "job title" and it is a great brand to have. I have always tried to do the same thing, connecting people who can help each other. So far it hasn't made me rich, but I have made a lot of people happy by introducing them to someone who can solve their immediate problems.
Helping visionary brands with their storytelling.
5 年Such a lovely article Sue ???? As for this moniker potentially ‘damaging your brand’? I’ve started to see two kinds of brands. One is the micro-managed, the photo-filtered, the ‘don’t say anything for fear of upsetting someone’ brand and the other is the brand from the heart. Real and sometimes raw. It’s the human brand that will flourish. It cares about people; it gathers them up and involves people in its business and its journey. That’s you ?? (for more about the human brand, read Mark Schaefer’s book, Marketing Rebellion: The most human company wins).
