Teaching The Fine Art of Patient Management
Do you know what to offer your patients?...
Keratoconus management has undergone significant transformations in recent years, offering us a broader array of tools and techniques. Innovative treatment methods are now available or soon to come, including?Large 9mm Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty (DALK), which can provide superior refractive outcomes with less irregular astigmatism vs other strategies. This technique maximizes the removal of ectatic tissue while maintaining a superior safety profile.
Diagnostic capabilities have also advanced, with?artificial intelligence (AI) revolutionizing keratoconus detection and monitoring. AI algorithms demonstrate superior accuracy in early detection and can assist in predicting progression, optimizing treatment protocols, and identifying high-risk individuals.
Ongoing clinical trials are exploring approaches including bioengineered corneal inlays and gene therapy. A novel biosynthetic collagen inlay has shown positive results in addressing previous biocompatibility concerns. And the possibility of CRISPR-based editing is on the horizon.
Recent advancements in?Corneal Collagen Cross-Linking (CXL) have led to the development of accelerated and epithelium-on protocols, enhancing comfort and reducing treatment time. The emergence of?CXL Plus, which combines cross-linking with refractive techniques, is also a significant step forward.
These developments are just some examples of the rapid evolution in keratoconus diagnostics and management, offering us more effective options to improve outcomes and quality of life.
