Recently my friend Wangari Fahari shoot me her new single and I waited a bit to listen, because her song are always so profound that I didn't know how I was going to react. Well, here is what came our of her amazing new album!
In the vast landscapes of Kenya, where traditions intertwine with modernity, lies a rich tapestry of cultural heritage and resiliency. Among its myriad of treasures, music stands tall as a timeless beacon of hope and salvation, a powerful force that has uplifted the spirits of many and empowered women to break free from the shackles of societal norms.
Once a British colony, Kenya endured the erasure of cultural value and heritage, leaving many songs lost and forgotten. However, there were those who refused to let their voices be silenced. One such individual was a young woman who found herself trapped in a life predetermined by others, destined to become a doctor. Yet, the echoes of her ancestors' songs whispered within her soul, urging her to sing and share the stories of her people.
The collision of colonization, Christianity, and traditional gender roles stifled her desire to embrace her musical talents fully. In a society that deemed a woman's singing as unsuitable and frowned upon, she struggled to find her place. But fate had other plans for her. A serendipitous encounter with music at school ignited an inexplicable passion that she couldn't ignore.
As she witnessed the rise of a new music culture among middle-class youth, she became captivated by their ability to create beats and express themselves freely. Their music was a cultural renaissance, a rebellion against the stifling norms imposed on them. With an insatiable thirst for knowledge, she sought guidance from those who had already paved the way, constantly chasing the next lesson and refining her craft.
Her journey reached a turning point when she traveled to South Africa, a land where music emanated from the heartbeats of its people. In the vibrant streets of Soweto, she found herself in awe of the music that surged through the souls of black South Africans. The stomping of feet and the resonating songs of freedom left an indelible mark on her spirit. As she returned to Kenya, she carried with her the spirit of Soweto, the energy that stirred her soul, and a newfound appreciation for the power of music.
With her spear held high, symbolic of her unwavering determination, she resolved never to be silenced again. Music became her weapon of choice against oppression, and she embarked on a journey to reclaim her voice and her heritage. As she rose to prominence as a singer, she found solace in her music, and her captivating performances ignited a spark in the hearts of many.
