Kenya Pledges Gender-Inclusive Approach to Addressing Drug Abuse

Kenya has reaffirmed its commitment to integrating gender-sensitive strategies into its drug policies, addressing the unique challenges faced by women in substance abuse. Dr. Stephen Mairori, chairperson of the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), emphasized this commitment during the 68th session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs in Vienna, Austria. He highlighted that while men are more likely to use drugs, women often suffer more severe consequences, necessitating tailored rehabilitation frameworks.

To bridge gender disparities in treatment, Kenya has revised its National Drug Control Policy to include comprehensive strategies for women. This includes the establishment of women-only rehabilitation centers that cater to specific needs such as pregnancy, childcare, and safety concerns, allowing women to access support without stigma. NACADA has also launched free rehabilitation services for women at the Miritini Drug Rehabilitation Centre in Mombasa, eliminating financial barriers to treatment. Dr. Mairori called for global collaboration to uphold international recommendations on gender-sensitive drug policies and to enhance program effectiveness through strengthened partnerships.
