Keir Starmer's Gloomy Rose Garden Speech
Keir Starmer's Gloomy Rose Garden Speech
Winter is coming sooner than we thought - that's the message to take from Sir Keir Starmer's speech this week from the No. 10 Downing Street rose garden. After a tricky few weeks for our new Prime Minister over the Pensioner's winter fuel allowance cuts, riots and unrest, the unrelenting illegal boats' migration, the early release of prisoners and the recent cronyism claims, Starmer attempted to seize?the agenda with a speech looking to the months ahead. Anyone hoping for optimism will have been most disappointed. He warned that things will only get worse - "frankly - things will get worse before they get better" were his exact monotone words.
?
What he came up with was essentially "look at the mess the Tory's have left us in". Everything difficult at the moment, he argued, is the fault of the last Tory Government, from the £22bn black hole in the public finances to the societal black hole in which the sense of lawlessness led to the riots. "We have NO OTHER choice given the situation we are in" and "we now have to make these difficult decisions". He goes on to say that October's Budget "is going to be painful and those with the broadest shoulders should bear the heaviest burden" - another way of saying that we are coming after those that already contribute the most to the public tax purse.
?
In my opinion, Keir Starmer's speech was another shameless attempt to blame the previous government and mislead the?public on the state of our economy. I was very critical of the way the Conservatives ran our nation but the UK was still the fastest growing economy in the G7 group of countries when they were ousted from power. But Labour's first act in power was to reward the Union barons with inflation busting public sector pay rises. And to pay for this, they are coming after our pensioners, parents, and now our tax payers.?
?
The use of the words "we have NO CHOICE" is such a lame cop out - there are always choices. We are lucky to be living in an age of abundance - places like Dubai, Singapore, China figured this out many years ago with visionary 10 / 20 / 50 year plans to create sustainable high growth economies with a fraction of the fundamental strengths the UK has always had. The UK can and should be the highest GDP per capita in the world - we have always been a wealthy creative nation so the foundations have always been there. It should be the destination of choice for high earners, entrepreneurs, academics, IT professionals, media producers, global businesses, etc. We have the perfect time zone, a mild stable climate, a global language, world class banking and some of the best universities in the world. Creativity, innovation, dynamism, expertise and entrepreneurial thinking should be coming to the UK in droves - the NO CHOICES mindset is a dangerous path being forced upon us - there are and always will be better options!
?
I will finish with one of Margaret Thatcher's famous sayings which is as relevant today as it was then - "the problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money".?
