"I can do this. I can do this. I can do this."
I’ve repeated this to myself more times than I can count—during job promotions, grad school, difficult projects, and sleepless nights with my son. And if you’re someone who pushes yourself toward growth, you’ve probably been there too.
In those moments, it’s easy to lose sight of why we’re doing what we do. But when we stay connected to our why—our mission, vision, or purpose—we have an anchor that keeps us steady, even when things feel overwhelming.
So, why did you become a manager? And how do you stay connected to that reason when work gets hard?
Read more over on Substack on defining your ‘why’ and practical tips to stay grounded in leadership like:
?? Having a person in mind who is impacted by my why. For me, that is:
Juan from Albuquerque, New Mexico. He had a post-it note from his daughter on his first day as a manager framed in his office. He showed it to me and told me that was what kept him going during his tough times. I will run through walls to make his work life better and help him win.
My son. My intention is to give him an exceptional life. My love and dedication to him is stronger than the negative feelings I may feel during a stressful work situation.
?? Inspiration on hand and that ‘hacks’ my feelings
All my friends know I love Tik Tok. I have a folder of inspirational videos saved that I look at regularly, and that thankfully the algorithm feeds me! My intention is to give my son an exceptional life involving travel to see the world. These videos include inspirational views of the Lofoten Islands, a volcano, the Mediterranean, walks through the Cotswalds. All of course set to inspirational music - thank you M83.
?? Fresh air
No, not the NPR podcast, even though that is a 10/10 podcast.
When I feel crushed by those work stressors, it usually means I haven’t gotten outside. Every time I take a walk, look at the trees, and don’t have a podcast running I come back refreshed and with some perspective. If that feeling dissipates quickly - back outside we go!
Do you have any good ways to stay connected to your Why? Pinterest? Facebook? Vision board? I would love to hear it!
