One of the greatest challenges for leaders and managers today is keeping employees engaged. Do you know what it means to keep your employees engaged and the impact if they are not?
Let’s start with the definition of employee engagement. Gallup defines employee engagement as the involvement and enthusiasm of employees in their work and workplace.*
Employees are your most valuable asset and how they handle decisions every day can make a great impact on your organization. The way they handle their jobs can grow your company or it can deplete resources putting your company at risk.
A Gallup survey shows that only 23% of employees worldwide and 32% in the U.S. fall in the engage category. * Those are pretty staggering percentages. How does your organization fare at keeping your employees engaged?
As a leader or a manager you are responsible to make sure your employees are engaged. They need to know what needs to be accomplished, they need to understand the team and company priorities, and they need to know how their work contributes to the success of the company. Just like the employee needs to be equipped properly to be effectively engaged, managers and leaders need to well-equipped to handle these responsibilities.
It is no longer enough to just tell people to do their job, or to tell managers to keep employees engaged. There has been a shift in what keeps an employee engaged. More and more people are looking for a company where they are valued for who they are and what they bring to the table. They look for open and genuine conversation where strong connections can be built within teams. They want to know how their purpose impacts the company and understand the why behind the requirements.
Leaders and managers need to know how to coach their employees to bring out their very best, to help them have meaning and purpose in their work, to know what makes each person unique, and to be available so strong relationships are built. These are the things that will keep your employees engaged.
As a leader or a manager, what are your challenges in driving employee engagement in your organization?
