New Course ALERT: Introduction to Archaeological Illustration

Our brand-new six-week free online course “Introduction to Archaeological Illustration” will provide insights into different types of illustrations used in archaeology, covering related tools and techniques as well as specific topics such as ceramics, lithics, and stratigraphy.?

What will you learn?

Week 01 will revolve around the history of archaeological illustration and its relevance in the 21st?century. In Week 02, students will learn about the fundamentals of archaeological illustration, for instance about reconstructions, artifact drawings or stratigraphic site maps. Week 03 will provide a guide on how to draw ceramics, from fragments and rim sherds to reconstructive illustrations. In Week 04, students will gain an understanding of how lithics are illustrated – guess how many rules there are when it comes to drawing flint tools, for example! Week 05 ventures into the complex mapping of stratigraphic sites, and how to draw these plans without any unnecessary clutter. Finally, in Week 06, the mentor will introduce digital techniques used in archaeological illustration, and the important role they play to make archaeology more accessible.??

Who will you learn from??

Emile Nelson is an archaeologist who holds a master’s degree in Archaeology from the University of Edinburgh, UK (2021-2022) and a bachelor’s degree in History from Portland State University, USA (2016-2019). In the past, she gave a mini lecture series on the British Stone Age and participated in the excavation of a Maya commoner village in Belize. Additionally, she completed the task of sketching the VGC collection at the University of Edinburgh. Her academic interests include archaeological illustration, Mayan archaeology, and ceramic studies. Her additional interests include Muay Thai, archery, writing, and painting.

Thank you for your continued interest in #schgArchTalk, an international virtual conference hosted by the Save Cultural Heritage Group. Following our successful launch last year, we are excited to continue bringing together participants of all levels, from beginners to professional researchers, to celebrate International Archaeology Day on 21 October 2023. Our second season will focus on topics such as the representation of historical and archaeological heritage in modern media, the impact of climate change on cultural heritage, and the importance of conveying archaeological research to the public.

Curious about the themes?

The event will provide a platform to a variety of people to have them share insights into their research as well as their work experience. Three particular themes will be at the centre of our event:

Session 01: Ancient Paths & Modern Tracks

We will discuss, among others, how historical & archaeological heritage is represented in modern media and whether different ideologies and narratives are portrayed there.

Session 02: Climate Change & Cultural Heritage

The talks will revolve around the impact of climate change on cultural heritage and the need for international, national, and local solutions for sustainability.

Session 03: Accessible Communication in Archaeology

It will include the importance of conveying archaeological research to the public and suggest ways to attract the public through various media.
