KEEPING UP WITH THE JONESES AFTER 20 YEARS AT THE TOP
There are certain people you meet in life that just impress you. When two of them are married to eachother then you’re pretty sure they’ll have achieved something pretty special over the years. That’s definitely true of Roger and Sue Jones, and last week I was lucky enough to be there as they celebrated 20 years of their Michelin Star restaurant, The Harrow at Little Bedwyn, with friends and family. And there were some mighty wines to help us on the way…
Roger is very much a wine-focused chef, doing work for (amongst others) the New Zealand, Chilean, and South African wine boards. He’s also a contributing editor at The Buyer, the on-trade magazine I write for. He’s talented, funny, and has always been there with advice whenever I’ve asked. So a 6am start from hiking with my mates in North Wales was nothing, I was going to be there to man the bubbles station for all the mates turning up.
Some pretty impressive bubbles on the table including the UK’s own Nyetimber 2003 Blanc De Blancs, an impressive Veuve Clicquot Reserve 1995, and a kindly donated (by Tom Stevenson of the CSWWC) double magnum of Charles Heidsieck 1989. But the one that caught the imaginations of all attending was the photo above. The full 1988-1990 Krug Collection, the first one they did, and one they launched at The Harrow back in the day.
Roger and Sue will continue to run this amazing restaurant in the biscuit-tin-beautiful village of Little Bedwyn, and I urge you all to go if you’re there or there abouts. These guys know how to look after people!
Cheers
