Keeping on track in the new year
With the new year here, a lot of us are trying to get ready for the new decade and a new splurge of energy and activity.
I’m doing my best to keep on top of all my new plans and projects, and to help me, I’m using the same tools I’ve been using for years. I have systems that help me stayed focused, and it is well known that adopting one system or routine that works for you is a good way to reduce wasted time.
If you didn’t read my article “Free tools to help busy trainers”, have a quick look here at some of my favourites.
I still use the same tools that I talk about in that article, but have 3 new ones to add to the list:
Mindmup.com
A great tool for planning out ideas or organising new projects – if you don’t already mindmap, give it a try. It’s a really helpful, visual way to start shaping your ideas and the first step in
If you’re anything like me, you’ll also love doing this on paper – use as many colours as you can to code your thoughts and group ideas, highlight important themes or content, and doodle or develop your ideas in whichever way works best for you.
Google Drive
This is without a doubt the one tool I use the most. It is great for taking notes, creating documents while on the move, saving larger files to share with others, and lots of other things. Creating shared documents (word, excel, PPT) is extremely easy and there is a lot of free storage so you can create and save to your heart’s content.

Spotify
This has become key in my day-to-day work. It helps keep me focused, it helps to relax me, inspire me, energise me… it’s so helpful to have different music ready to go, exactly when you need it. It’s also helpful to drown out unwanted noise in the office! If you’re not a fan of listening to music, try one of the soundscapes and see how that works.
