Keeping step(s) with AI and learning design.

Designing learning experiences and ecosystems that deliver performance and business outcomes.
Walking through The Rocks on convict sandstone stairs on my way to the Australian Heritage Hotel was an interesting backdrop to a conversation about AI and learning design.
Nine of us soaked up the setting sun and a bunch of great pizzas (my favourite, only in Australia, the Coat of Arms, featuring roast emu and kangaroo!) and connected over shared gripes (don't get a bunch of learning designers started about content driven courses), stories of travel, flowstate, the joy of not doing things you don't enjoy, Bersin's four Es and renovations.
I enjoyed (again) the mix of familiar and new faces, and pushing myself to read, watch and listen (got the media trifecta this time!) to some great preparation materials, and the expertise of our special guest and AI in L&D expert Kerri Buttery . And I got to be guest at this table thanks to co-hosts Maryanne Vorreiter and Chemène Sinson !
Preparation materials
My takeaways were the value of developing 'prompt engineering' skills (something that we need to be teaching participants more about) to improve the quality of what AI generates. I'm going to curate a cheat sheet on this as follow up (and may even use AI to develop it!).

And the importance of iterating in the generative process to refine the output.
I have some tools to explore (looking forward to Descript), some learning theorists to revisit (Bersin and?Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi), and?a book on designing for virtual learning to read (signed by the authors and brought back from the ATD conference for me in May last year, thanks for bringing it Marie Daniels ).?
Am I worried about AI doing me out of a job? No.
Should you be worried? Maybe.?
They say that the biggest risk with AI is not going on the AI journey. I've been exploring AI for a while now. I think I got nominated for a working group on it because I kept getting red flagged by our IT systems for going to AI sites. It's been a valuable and interesting journey that has definitely improved my IDeL skills (I'll write a separate post about this) and I'm sure tonight won't be the last table we have on this topic.
No. I wrote this. But I did brainstorm with ChatGPT for the title, and it's better than the 'Keep up' that I started with.
Curious? Want to join or host an IDeL table? Check out the LinkedIn group https://www.dhirubhai.net/groups/14365624/ or the Meetup https://www.meetup.com/instructional-design-and-elearning-meetup/

1 年Well put. The biggest risk with AI is not going on the AI journey. The biggest benefit is meeting up with real humans to discuss!

1 年Thanks for posting these reflections, Neil Von Heupt FAITD, FILP. It was a great night out - but that said, it was a winning formula... fantastic company, wine and pizza. It was a solid step forward as I continue to tread through this world of AI and how we can leverage it in what we do.
