Keeping It Simple: Why Leaders Must Go Where the Work Happens

In large organizations, we often strive for visibility, communication, and collaboration by building elaborate systems and processes. These are intended to help teams stay connected and aligned. But instead of simplifying work for teams, these systems often add complexity, shifting the burden to the very people we rely on to deliver results.

Agile values simplicity—not as an afterthought, but as a principle that enables speed, focus, and adaptability. Yet, too often, we ask teams to mold their workflows to fit complex structures designed to satisfy leadership’s need for updates and alignment. This approach misses a crucial point: the role of leaders is to support teams, not the other way around.

Imagine a gardener who insists the plants bring themselves to the sun. It’s absurd, yet this is what happens when leaders require teams to expend time and energy presenting their work instead of focusing on delivering value. Leaders must come to where the work is happening. Whether through gemba walks, informal check-ins, or joining stand-ups, leaders need to engage directly with the teams to understand their challenges and progress.

This shift does more than reduce unnecessary burdens—it fosters a culture of trust. When leaders make the effort to immerse themselves in the work, they gain authentic insights, build stronger relationships, and demonstrate that their priority is enabling teams to thrive.

Simplifying the path for teams creates space for creativity, innovation, and execution. The more we remove obstacles and eliminate unnecessary complexity, the more we allow teams to focus on what matters: delivering value to customers.

In Agile, simplicity isn’t just a principle—it’s a responsibility. And it begins with leaders who are willing to step into the work, not above it. Let’s make the simple things truly simple.

Let me email this to myself and share it with the leadership team I'm working with on Monday ??
