Our beloved city is getting an upgrade.

Keeping our eyes on the prize

I am absolutely thrilled that shovels will go into the ground later this year as Lambton Quay through to Courtenay Place gets a major upgrade!

This is the refresh that Wellington has been crying out for. It will revitalise the city and is the transformational change that I was elected on. More of the same is just not an option. It’s time to get on with this.

So, what is this?

It’s creating a “Golden Mile” with bus priority, wider footpaths, enhanced safety and more trees in welcoming outdoor spaces. Take a minute to watch the flyover video to get a sense of what’s planned for Lambton Quay and Courtenay Place.

Shops can expect more pedestrian traffic with roads that are safer to cross, so that accessing shops on either side of the street becomes easier. Overall the transformation is estimated to deliver hundreds of millions of dollars in benefit to our city.

I have heard valid concerns about how well this project has been communicated, and my amendment to set up a business advisory group should help with this going forward. Equally I do want to highlight that significant changes have been made as a result of feedback from businesses and the public as well.

Ultimately this project will be good for our city and our businesses. These changes are what a majority of Wellingtonians have asked for and as Mayor, I’m proud to be leading Pōneke to become a sustainable and prosperous city, for the current generation and generations to come.

The Council has plans in place to monitor the economic wellbeing of disrupted businesses on the Golden Mile, and will work with business on practical ways we can help manage them to mitigate the impacts.

The transformation of the Golden Mile is a bold, exciting project. I’m so stoked it’s finally happening.

Thank you for not caving to conservative business interests, who hold a disproportionate amount of influence in what certainly is a democratic process as a public good. We need leaders who look forward with a vision, rather than more of the kind of self-serving and self-centred egotism that dominated the past and got us into the current mess. Cars as the DeFacto personal transport doesn't work, causes traffic endlessly regardless whether you fund roads more than education, which NZ has tried and done. At least these footpaths wont be ripped up in a year, by transport companies externalising those costs to public. Just get done what needs to be done for collective moral good and ignore the naysayers.

I am looking forward to the extensive engagement and consultation with Stakeholders such as the Tourism sector around this. In particular, customer pickups from central city hotels impacted by this decision, visits to the Wellington Cable Car etc. To use my full Christian name - I’m not a ‘Doubting Thomas’ but the verdict is currently out on this from my perspective.
