It can’t be denied that the effects of aging are often seen first on our face. Even with a good skin care regimen and with staying out of the sun, when we look in the mirror we can often see those fine lines and wrinkles, along with sagging skin. Our lips can also be subjected to the passage of time and may appear to become thinner and taut.
While there are plenty of creams and serums to help with those fine lines, there aren’t any over-the-counter solutions that can restore a loss of lip volume. Unfortunately losing lip volume can be very noticeable because our lips are one of the first things that people notice about us.
There are, however, some steps that you can take in order to prevent your lips from having that aged thinning appearance.
What causes lip thinning?
Collagen is a naturally occurring protein in our bodies. It forms into fibres, and these collagen fibres are responsible to your skin being smooth, firm and full. As we age, our bodies begin to lose collagen, and those fibres start to break down. This can lead to wrinkles, sagging skin and of course thinning of the lips when it starts to happen there.
In addition to scheduling a consultation with a specialist for dermal fillers, Jade Cosmetic Clinicsuggests some additional steps that you can take to help keep your lips looking youthful and feeling healthy.
Protecting your lips from the sun
You know the importance of protecting your skin from the harmful UV rays of the sun. Did you know that it’s just as important for you to protect your lips? Use a quality lip balm that offers sun protection factor (SPF). Apply the balm to your lips and to the area just around your lips in order to protect this sensitive skin from exposure to the sun.
Consider wearing a wide-brimmed hat when you are outdoors, to protect your whole face.
Staying hydrated
We all know how important it is to stay hydrated. Not only is good hydration essential for a healthy body, but getting in your 8 glasses a day can also help to keep your skin and lips looking nourished, hydrated and fresh.
Quitting smoking
There are a number of solid medical reasons to stop smoking. Being able to see an improvement in the appearance of your lips should be one of these great reasons. Tobacco smoke is well-known for drying out that sensitive and delicate skin around the mouth. This can lead to the signs of premature ageing, along with the potential to develop fine lines around the mouth.
Cosmetic lip treatments
There are several lip treatments that can help to keep your lips supple and looking fuller. Dermal fillers for your lips much in the same way as dermal fillers used on the face. They are a replacement for your body’s natural collagen and will help to keep your lips looking youthful and full.
The dermal filler will be injected just beneath the skin on the lips. Results should be visible within a few hours after the procedure. There may be some mild swelling, but it should subside.
Lip scrubs and lip serums are great additions to your daily and weekly beauty routine. Taking care of your lips will help you to retain that youthful glow you feel on the inside.
