KEEPING EMPLOYEES HAPPY

The cardinal rule of keeping employees happy is to treat them as you would wish to be treated yourself.

The best bosses have been employees themselves. They have started at the bottom and felt how they were treated, either well or badly. Then they understand that productivity is best gained by having their teams cooperating to do well. If employees feel that they are valued this is good for business, and the opposite if they are not.

There is an idea being taught at universities that all that is important is the return to shareholders. Many CEO’s can believe that this is all that matters. The truth is that the best businesses have their CEO go down to the factory floor, ask questions and listen to what is important to make the company more successful from how to position machinery, how to improve the workflow and how to improve the supply chain. The best ideas for improvement often come from the working people themselves.

It is important to ensure that employees are able to cover each other when one or more have to take time off for emergencies. Cover means that more than one person is trained to carry out what is required at work. Leaving work for reasons such as an ill child, Covid or a family funeral are reasonable, and allowances must be made for these whilst planning not to disrupt the work.

Keeping staff in the loop is very important. During a downturn or where there are large problems facing the business, it is important to include employees in the conversation. Not only do they worry about their future jobs but they are entitled to understand what is happening where they work. Not only may they be able to offer improvements, but during times of recession they will understand that all should work together, sometimes harder to get through the bad times.

Interesting ideas can make the workplace better, such as allocating a space for gym equipment, a fresh fruit box delivered to the lunch room or access to a financial planner. Review the work hours: a preference for working longer hours four days a week with Friday off, or a day or two working remote may suit your business.

And finally, kindness is the most important part of management whilst ensuring that you are not being walked over. This will ensure that working at your business will bring you the best financial results.
