Keeping Cyber-Safe and Tips for the Job Search

Hello everybody – We hope you had a great week. It’s been a steady week here at 482jobs HQ with a break on Thursday due to the Australia Day national public holiday.

Australia Day is a big deal down under. It's celebrated on the 26th of January each year, marking the day when the first fleet of British ships arrived in Sydney all the way back in 1788.

Many people (me included) celebrated the day by enjoying a few cold beers and having a fantastic BBQ with the family. In recent years, however, Australia day has become a more controversial holiday due to its association with the colonisation of Indigenous Australians. Some people are even calling for the date to be changed! Although this may happen in the future, for now, it's a day to be proud of being Australian and to celebrate the great country we ALL call home!

Onto this week’s newsletter, we have a few things we’d like to cover this week.

Keeping yourself cyber-safe.

An excellent candidate spotlight/interview with Poppy, a teacher who secured a job through our website and has recently moved from the UK to Melbourne, Australia.

Finally, a few words on why experience is essential.

Let us know what you want to see next. At the time of typing, we have 16,000 subscribers to our newsletter, and we’d like to welcome you all. If you have any suggestions for things you’d like to see in future editions. Please let us know by dropping a comment.

Keeping yourself cyber-safe online

Firstly, onto online safety. Posting your resume online may seem like a great way to get your name and credentials in front of potential employers during a job search, and in some cases, it is!

However, we have seen visitors include their resumes, driving licenses and all sorts of personal information in comment replies to jobs we have shared on Social media, and it’s important to realise that doing so can put your personal information at risk.

Think about it! Your resume contains nearly all the personal information available about you, including your full name, address, phone number, email, where you work now, where you worked in the past, the school you went to, and activities you are involved with.

Cybercriminals can steal one's identity, open new accounts, or hack existing ones, with far less information than what is provided in a resume so please be very careful what you share online, especially on LinkedIn and other social media websites!

Register your interest and share your resume the right way

At 482jobs.com, we offer the option for our website visitors to formally register their interest in Australia-sponsored job opportunities by adding their resumes to our database.

This free service means Australian employers and recruiters can find you when they are looking for someone with your skillsets for jobs here in Australia. Once uploaded to 482jobs.com, it is secured on our server, away from the public eye, where only users with the correct viewing permissions (our staff or verified recruiters) will have access.

Poppy Walker - Moved from the UK to Melbourne Australia after securing a job through 482jobs.com

Candidate Spotlight. Poppy

In this week’s newsletter, we’d like to introduce Poppy Walker. ?

Poppy joined our website back in October 2021 and recently completed the move from the UK to Melbourne, Australia, after securing a sponsored teaching job with 482jobs.com

482jobs:?Can you tell us a little about yourself and your background?

Poppy: I'm Poppy, a teacher from Manchester in the UK. I recently moved to Australia after securing a teaching job through 482jobs.com. I'm single and in my early 30s and decided to take the leap and move to Australia on my own.

482jobs: Why did you decide to move to Australia, and what made you apply for a job through our website?

Poppy: I've always been drawn to Australia and living and working there after going to Australia on holiday a number of years ago. It took me a few months of searching to find the right job opportunity and I had been looking for jobs in Australia for a while before I came across your website. Not long after signing up with 482jobs.com, I saw the job advertised and it seemed like the perfect opportunity. I was impressed by the variety of job opportunities available and the ease of the application process.

482jobs: Once you arrived in Australia. Did you find it difficult to get settled?

Poppy: Once I arrived in Australia, I did have some challenges getting settled. It’s not easy adjusting to a new environment, especially when you are on your own. I found it challenging to get all the paperwork and set up my new life, like getting a phone, internet, and bank account, but with the help of my new employer and some other ex-pats, I could figure everything out.

The people I have met so far, including my new work colleagues have all been super friendly and welcoming, which made the transition much easier. I also made sure to take some time to explore Melbourne and get to know the area, which helped me feel more comfortable and familiar with my new home.

Overall, I would say that the process of getting settled took some time and effort, but it was manageable, and I'm glad I took the opportunity to move to Australia.

482jobs: What would you do differently if you were to go through the process again?

Poppy: ?If I were to go through the process again, I would do a few things differently. Firstly, I’d have found your website much sooner! Secondly, I would research the cost of living and housing in the area where I planned to move. This would have helped me budget better and better understand what to expect regarding expenses. Thirdly, I would try to make more connections with other ex-pats or people from the UK who were already living in Australia before I moved. This would have given me a support system and people to turn to for advice and help getting settled. Finally, I would have started with the paperwork and administration tasks earlier so that everything would have been in order before I left, and I would have had more time to focus on the fun aspects of moving, like exploring my new city and meeting new people.

482jobs: How do you find teaching in Australia compared to teaching in the UK?

Poppy: There are some differences in teaching in Australia compared to the UK. One of the big differences is the classroom setup. In Australia, the classrooms are typically more open and have less structure than in the UK, where classrooms tend to be more traditional. The teaching style is also different. In Australia, there is a strong focus on group work and hands-on learning, whereas in the UK there is more emphasis on presentations from the teacher and individual work. I’d also say that the school culture and management are different. In the UK, school management tends to be centralised, whereas in Australia, school management is more decentralized which gives more autonomy to the teachers in terms of curriculum planning and lesson delivery which is cool!

482jobs: Do you have any advice for others considering making a move like this?

Poppy: My advice would be to go for it! Moving to a new country can be daunting, but it's also a fantastic opportunity to experience a different culture and way of life. Do your research and be prepared, but don't let fear hold you back.

482jobs: Would you recommend our website, 482jobs.com to other people looking for jobs abroad?

Poppy: Definitely! Your website made the process of finding and applying for a job in Australia so easy. Mark was incredibly helpful, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for job opportunities in Australia.

482jobs: Thank you so much for your time today Poppy!

Poppy: No, thank you!

We’d love to include other success stories in future editions of our newsletter, so if you are a previous candidate who has successfully moved after securing a job through our website – We would love to feature you! Please reach out to us so we can feature you!

Why experience is essential.

Our final topic for this week is why experience is essential.

When considering Australian Sponsored Visa opportunities, it's crucial to remember that the visa is only one aspect of the process.

The most important factor is finding a job with an Australian employer who is seeking someone with the necessary experience.

If you find a job on our website, please remember that before being offered a position, you will be required to participate in at least one interview.

If the employer is not convinced that you don’t have the skills or experience, the job will not be offered and, as a result, the visa will not be granted. You can only think about getting sponsored once you have a job offer on the table,

If you wouldn't have a chance of getting the job in your come country its even more unlikely that you won't get the job in Australia.

That’s a wrap!

That’s it for this week’s newsletter – it turned into a larger one than expected, so please let us know if you have any suggestions on how we can improve future editions or topics you’d like to see covered. We want to make this something you find valuable so your feedback is important to us. Please also feel free to share our newsletter with friends, family or colleagues who might be interested in a move to Australia.
