Keep It Super Simple

Keep It Super Simple

When I was 18, I started to study programming.? In my first class the teacher wrote on the blackboard KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid or Keep It Super Simple) … and yes, we where still using a blackboard back then ??. He explained that software should be simple. That mantra was key for me in my programming days and also when I was a business owner and president.

Walk at Home, a fitness phenomenon fitness company, the brainchild of Leslie Sansone, a woman who turned a simple idea like the ability to walk at home into a multi-million-dollar empire. Sansone's unique approach to fitness, which focuses on walking workouts which you can do in the convenience of your home, has resonated with millions worldwide. In this post I want to share the idea of simplicity and consistency.

I found out about this idea during Covid days. That helped me to keep in shape while I couldn’t go out and walk outside. Since walking is part of my routine, I am using the app whenever the weather won’t allow walking outside or when I want a great workout with an instructor.

A Self-Made Success Story Sansone's journey to success wasn't without its challenges. After gaining weight and struggling with her health, she discovered the power of walking. She began creating workout videos, sharing her passion for fitness with others. Her infectious energy and easy-to-follow routines quickly gained popularity. Sansone's net worth aren't publicly disclosed, it's estimated to be 200 million dollars, a testament to her entrepreneurial spirit and the success of Walk at Home.

It occurred to me that if Leslie Sansone could build a multi-million dollars business around such a simple routine, there are a few lessons we can learn from her in building successful business.

?

Lessons we can learn:

  • Simplicity is Key: Leslie Sansone's workouts are accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels, proving that effective exercise doesn't have to be complicated. It also apply to the idea of the one thing. Since the creation of the business, she kept the simplicity the same – four basic steps- walk in place, side steps, kicks, and knee lifts. That’s it!
  • Passion is Power: Her genuine enthusiasm for walking at home is evident in every workout, inspiring viewers to stay motivated and healthy. When you are growing your business, show it - have fun and let everyone see it. When I worked in the company, I used to be president, we delt with a “dry” topic – standards. The way I talked about it, the way I implemented it, I demonstrated that working with standards can be fun, it is important and my strong belief in it was transformed to my employees and my clients.
  • Consistency is Crucial: Regular, even moderate exercise, can lead to significant health benefits. Same can apply to working on your business. Every day make time for strategy. Eventually it accumulates and makes a difference in your business.
  • Embrace Innovation: Leslie Sansone has adapted to changing times by offering a variety of workout formats, including DVDs, streaming services, apps and a subscription model. Today a business without innovation can’t survive. Like Jeff Bezos said – you always need to be in Day 1. While she kept innovating, she kept it simple – always going back to basics – the 4 steps.
  • Systems are key – The simplicity of her workout, that is based on the simple four steps system, was repeated in every video. She also created a simple language. For example, when doing side steps, she always uses the phrase “Out Together”. ?That enabled other instructors to appear in the televised workouts allowing her to focus on growing the business and to enjoy life. ?
  • Hire good people – Leslie Sansone always surrounded herself with enthusiastic instructors that helped her and in due time replaced her in delivering classes. That is the desired outcome every business owner is seeking.

In our era, every business can be a huge success. Make it simple, focus on one thing, make it approachable to your customers, make it fun, use systems that allow repeatability and consistency. Good luck.

Please share what is your one simple secret that make your company unique. ?

This is a great summary, almost an anthem Shachar Perlman. Thank you for creating it. And you've drunk your own champagne by keeping is "simple". Six things to remember starting with "simplicity is key". Happy New Year!

Brilliant article Shachar! Simplicity sounds like a simple word, but it’s not easy to do things so simple and smooth, you give me an inspiration to pursue simplicity in our business, and that’s something. Thank you!??

Great article! Sometimes, making things simple is hard. I can say this about myself, it’s always the case that you want things to be simple, and you know you can make them simple, but something about complexity pulls you in, and it feels like you make it more complex than it needs to be. Simplifying is hard, but articles like this make it easier! ??
