Keep rollin, rollin, rollin…

There have rightly been significant moves to convert dirty mechanical processes powered by fossil or unsustainable fuels to electrical or cleaner fuels. The efficiency of kinetic processes within systems has been the subject of little scrutiny. Perhaps there is a perception that significant energy or environmental savings are not achieveable. The energy savings for even small applications are significant. When extrapolated to processes using multiple actuators then huge energy savings can be achieved. This can be coupled with increased environmental security as leaks from messy hydraulic alternatives are eliminated. Studies by groups like the Franhofer Institute indicate that the CO2 emissions from fossil fuel power plants is 33 times less when powered by an electro-mechanical solution in place of a pneumatic solution.

In a common manufacture process, a full cycle movement may include over 75% of the total time in a stationary position, wasting valuable energy to maintain pressure. Electrical roller screw thread actuators only require energy input when movement is required. When you square this off against the constant energy supply required to maintain pressure in hydraulic and pneumatic systems then it is apparent where just some of the efficiency savings are found. 

When you combine these green credentials with economic benefits like lower maintenance schedules, installation times (drives can be incorporated), enhanced cycle rates and longer lifetimes then it becomes a no brainer to start examining electrical screw thread actuators more closely. But I would say that… ??
