Keep Possession, Play It Simple, Play It Fast
Love them or hate them anyone who watched the Champions League final last weekend couldn't help but be impressed with the way Pep Guardiola's Manchester City took the title – that was the pinnacle of the Holy Grail, Premier League/FA Cup/Champions League. Astonishing in how easy it all was.
One thing is for certain Guardiola has changed the face of football.
When he took his first top coaching job at Barcelona in 2008 teams were playing an organised defensive game closing the game up without the ball with quick transitions when it was won – what Guardiola did was use the defense as the starting point of an attack.
Pep Segura who worked at Barcelona at the time says that Guardiola worked on the construction phases of the attacking game – playing out from the back into the two centrebacks then what?players do when the ball gets into midfield.
This then builds into the final third – he constructed play in this way.
With my youth players I ask them about certain areas – as a centreback receiving off the goalkeeper who do you want to pass to and what should that player be doing?
So that is what we work on, keeping possession, play it simple, play it fast. And what better way to work like that than taking out a subscription to Cupello, it will really help your team to be winners.
