Keep the "Main Thing the Main Thing"?

Keep the "Main Thing the Main Thing"

I'll keep it short and sweet today......

In your business figure out how to streamline, simplify, and narrow focus in any way possible.

Back when I was suffering through my MBA MANY years ago I was always amazed at the difference between the entrepreneurs and the big companies (most of the students in the Executive MBA Program were "middle management" in huge companies.)

We'd show up at their offices and, curious I'd always ask.... What specifically do you do here to contribute to the top line or improve the bottom line? Thought of a different way, how do you impact "Create and Keep a Customer."

Well, the guys and gals in the big companies ALWAYS gave me a blank look and then shared their job description (meaningless dribble.)

Then I'd ask, ok what did your day look like today? What did you do this week?

Well (Keep in Mind this was in 1999!) they'd tell me about a bunch of meetings, some busy work and then about their "Diversity Training" or, some other worthless thing to focus the employees on how they talked with each other, rather than focusing on the external market.

I heard a great speaker many years ago describe a high functioning team as everyone focusing externally on a powerful goal (Jim Collins in Built to Last, or maybe Good to Great) called these BHAG's (Big Hairy Audacious Goals.)

Dysfunctional teams sit around and look internally at each other worrying about how they are communication with one another. Well, what does that have to do with "Create and Keep a Customer?"

Anyway, just a quick thought for the day. Make sure you have BHAG's and Keep the Main Thing the Main Thing.
