Keep Karma And Carry On
Who’d have thought the best way to fight for our lives would be to stay home.
It's Mike Tyson time. Mike said, “everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth”. The first blows of COVID-19 have tested the reflexes of our company to react truly to our beliefs — quickly and, unlike Mike, with kindness.
Firstly we’ve opened about 30 offices around the world in the kitchens, lounges, bedrooms and garages of everyone we work with. WFM home is no longer shorthand for watching daytime TV, everyone is putting in long hours to get us through.
The right thing to do, after supporting our loved ones and workmates, is to save our company by cutting costs and preserving resources. But, we set up this business to do more; our purpose is to preserve and renew natural resources while supporting the people who live amongst them. These people and places need us now more than ever and we won’t be letting them down.
Sales of Karma Drinks dropped like the stone that closed all the cafes, restaurants, bars, pubs and cinemas that sell them. We’ve scrambled to find new ways of getting them to you, into supermarkets that are open, available online and with home delivery services so we can keep the lifeblood of our business — the sales of our drinks — flowing.
Soft drinks are not an emergency service but we want to be helpful. You can buy Karma Drinks at our mates rates 20% discount on Amazon UK. Use code: KEEPKARMA
In NZ go to the Karma Drinks online store and we’ll give you 15% off and free delivery.
Weekly orders have gone from thousands to a few boxes. Not enough to keep our team around the world in work, cover our operational overheads and continue to take care of the thousands more who benefit from the support of the Karma Foundation funded by the drinks we sell.
So, we’re making some bold moves in the kindest way we can to get through this with our values, our company and our Karma Foundation intact while doing the best we can to take care of the people we work with.
We’ve been offered help that we’re not too proud to accept so we’re furloughing some of our people and running with a smaller team to be agile in uncertain times.
We’re very grateful to the taxpayers in the UK and NZ for the support offered to us through our Governments and to all the Banks and Civil Servants working overtime to help us access this support. Just as much as we’re grateful for our respective National Health Workers, Civil Security and Defence Forces to keep us safe.
Weirdly, at the front line of a health crisis, Finance and Communications are more important and helpful than ever, and everyone we’re in contact with is doing their very best.
Our Directors will forgo their fees, our Executive Staff have reduced their hours, our Shareholders are being very patient and, even more so, everyone who works with us is calmly and reasonably doing everything they can to help.
We have a group of very committed colleagues who’ve become part of our Karma Whanau, some of whom have agreed to take a break while we trade through this. We’re also very grateful to them for stepping off for a while to lighten our load. For those who have made equally valuable contributions contracting with us, who we are unable to carry while we hunker down, we’ll be helping access other means of support until we’re back up and running at full capacity.
In our generations’ ‘best of times’ (neighbours are being heroically helpful to each other) ‘and worst of times’ (while anticipating grief and grieving) we remain resolutely ‘all in this together’, but with less to go round.
To misquote another heavyweight — Dr Suess — ‘we’re in pretty good shape for the shape we are in’, and we’re grateful for that.
If anyone would like to get in touch to collaborate or figure out how we can be better together and support the people helping us fight for our lives please get in touch.
And check out this initiative we’re involved in with Brewgooder to support the Heroes working on the front lines of the NHS.
